Striking the Rock
by Joe S. Martinez
The biblical account of Moses,
The Lord's appointed man
In Numbers, Chapter Twenty
Shows how he raised his hand
This time he did not bless God's people
This time he struck the Rock
To his dismay, he felt the pain
Of this, his greatest shock
You see, the Rock was Christ the Lord
Who took that angry blow
With this I see the grief I've caused
Before, I didn't know
And though the love my Savior gives me
Has ever been the same
Now I see how our sins can hurt him
That we've no one else to blame
I had never before imagined
What our sins and faults can do
That they strike the One most precious
The One who's kind and true
Dear Lord, help me love and obey you
To stay close and not depart
For if I strike you again, as I have in the past
It will surely break my heart
