The word is rarely used anymore and I suspect that those of you who have yet to hit the half century mark may have never heard it. I am referring to the word “druthers”  The dictionary says it is “the power or opportunity to choose.” It is an old alteration of “would rather.” Back in the 50’s, Bobby Darin recorded a song entitled “If I had my druthers.” The first line went like this: [If I had my druthers / I'd druther have my druthers  / Than anything else I know  /  While you'd druther hustle, accumulatin' muscle  / I'd druther watch daisies grow]
I think of this corny old word every time I come across these verses: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know! I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.” (Philippians 1:21-24) In more simple terms, Paul was saying: “Christ is my life but if I die, I win. I am in a dilemma. If I stay with you, I will get much fruit for my labor, but if I go to be with Jesus, it will be even better. Therefore, if I had my druthers, I’d choose to be with Him.”
I suspect that the majority of elderly Christians arrive at the same crossroad as Paul. They get to the point where they are torn with this thought: “Do I want to go or do I want to stay?” And just like Paul, many will see the benefits of both. If they stay, they feel they may be used of God to continue being a positive influence on others. They also know that their loved ones will be very happy if they stay with them just a little bit longer. If they go, on the other hand, they know that they will be free from all the pain and suffering of this old world, and easily recognize, as did Paul, that this will be far better for them even if they feel their families and loved ones will be hurt deeply upon their departure. They may even say: “All things being equal, if I had my druthers, I’d rather be with Jesus.” Do you have your druthers?

Memory verse for the week: (James 5:20“Remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save them from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”
